As more and more pop artists add writing a Broadway musical to their lists of career goals, Sara Bareilles stands out as one of the group's brightest success stories.
Waitress — the musical adaptation of Adrienne Shelly's beloved independent film, with music and lyrics by Bareilles — was an undisputed Broadway hit that ran for nearly four years after opening in April 2016.
That year, Bareilles' score earned her two Tony nominations (out of a total of four for the show), and she went on to perform the title role of Jenna for three different stints. The production played London's West End as well as internationally, earned a Grammy nomination for the original Broadway cast recording, and spawned a stand-alone album Bareilles (What's in: Songs from a waitressreleased on Epic Records between the show's Off-Broadway and Broadway runs) and a film of the stage show (debuting at the 2023 Tribeca Film festival).
Now, Bareilles – who has been warmly embraced by the wider theater community and earned another Tony nomination last year for her performance in The Baker's Wife in In the forest — returns to Broadway.
He writes the music and lyrics for Interestsan adaptation of New York Times bestselling novel by Meg Wolitzer with a book by Pulitzer and Tony-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl.
The plot of Wolitzer's novel revolves around the character Jules Jacobson and her friends from an exclusive children's arts camp (titled Interestings, as they call themselves) who grow up to find varying degrees of success and satisfaction or disillusionment with their led a creative life.
When it was released in 2013, the Times he called it “warm, all-American, and insightful about the motivations of its characters”, likening it to contemporary Great American Novels and praising Wolitzer's “comprehensive vision and generous sweep”. With its complex, multi-layered female lead and diverse cast of characters, as well as the quirky themes it explores — from what qualifies as success to whether being great is the only way to get there — the book seems like rich material for a musical adaptation, and is it is easy to see why it was abducted to Bareilles, whose Waitress it balanced the buoyancy with the bittersweet.
