Sean Kingston signed papers in California on Tuesday (May 28) waiving his right to fight extradition to Florida, where he and his mother are accused of more than $1 million in fraud. According to Associated Pressthe “Beautiful Girls” singer/rapper, 34, did not appear publicly in court, but representatives from the San Bernardino courts and sheriff's office confirmed to AP that Kingston signed documents agreeing to waive extradition.
Citing the papers, Kingston agreed to surrender to authorities in Florida, though as of Tuesday afternoon he reportedly remained in a Southern California jail while sheriff's officials coordinate his transfer to Florida. Kingston was arrested last Thursday at the Army training base at Fort Irwin, California in the Mojave Desert, where he had been held to appear. His mother, 61-year-old Janice Turner, was also arrested Thursday during a SWAT raid on Kingston's rental mansion in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
According to warrants from the Broward County Sheriff's Office, both the son (born Kisean Paul Anderson) and the mother have been charged with 10 counts, including conducting an organized scheme to defraud, grand larceny, identity theft, issuing bad checks, violating probation and related crimes. claiming the couple stole money, jewelry, a Cadillac Escalade and furniture. Kingston was already serving two years in prison for trafficking stolen goods.
On Tuesday, Kingston's attorney, Robert Rosenblatt, said NBC News that the singer was in the process of returning to Florida after his concert at the base. “We want him back as soon as possible so we can show that this is just a civil case and not a criminal one. We look forward to challenging this case in court,” said Rosenblatt.
The charges and arrests stem from a lawsuit reportedly filed by attorney Dennis Card, whose lawsuit claims Kingston has allegedly shown a pattern of not paying for items. “My client has a $150,000 TV sound system that's in there, there's also about $1 million worth of watches that are in there, there's an $80,000 custom bed that was ordered. This is an organized systematic fraud,” Card said NBC Miami. He added that Kingston has “basically a script. He says he's working with Justin Bieber and apparently he's doing a big show here, this is a rental house, he doesn't own it, and he's screwing over people using his celebrity to get them to release stuff without him paying for it. and then it just never pays.”
According to APwarrants in the case say that between October and March, Kingston and his mother allegedly stole nearly $500,000 in jewelry, more than $200,000 from Bank of America, $160,000 from an Escalade dealer, more than $100,000 from First Republic Bank and $86,000 from the custom bed manufacturer.
