It seems safe to say that Jo Koy's next stand-up special won't be lining up many Swifties. The stand-up who hosted the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night (January 7) earned the coldest stares from Taylor Swift during her opening monologue after making a joke about how often NFL cameras cut to the singer's reaction shots watching his friend Travis Kelce's games.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we get less camera shots of Taylor Swift,” the comic joked as the cameras naturally cut to Swift, who reacted with pursed lips and a cold stare before casually sipping from her champagne flute. The sense of collective uneasiness in the room and the less exuberant response from the singer typically known for her glitzy awards shows of energy, not for the first time during the polyphonic monologue, Koy apologized for faltering before continuing.
Swift made a last-minute appearance at the Dick Clark-produced show, taking her place in the packed Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom thanks to a nomination for of 2023 Taylor Swift: The Eras tour concert film in the new Cinematic and Boxing Achievement Awards category. Koy made the joke by noting that an NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants preceded the Globes on CBS.
Talking to you ET on his red carpet Advertising signAt the Globes after-party, Koy seemed to want to downplay the poor response to the comment. “Aww, man, that was cute,” Koy said of the joke that revealed how often Swift appears on camera while watching Kansas City Chiefs games. “I was just saying it was cute. I was just saying they're less cut, that's all.”
when ET Reporter Denny Directo suggested that Swift's salty sip might just be the result of her thirst for some champagne, Koy replied, “oh, man,” and shook the interviewer's hand. At press time it did not appear that Swift or Kelce had commented on the joke.
