“Dirt Cheap” producer Cody Johnson has collaborated with artists such as Jelly Roll (they recorded “Whiskey Bent” on Johnson's album Skin album) and Terri Clark (the two performed “I Just Wanna Be Mad” at Clark's Take two album). But he has his sights set on a duet with the reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year winner.
During a recent interview with Lon Helton USA Country CountdownJohnson said he's been meaning to do a collaboration with Lainey Wilson for some time.
“I'm going duck hunting with her friend Duck [Devlin “Duck” Hodges]. I guess that's how he got his name, because he's really into hunting,” he said. “I heard 'Louisiana Woman Mississippi Man' by Loretta Lynn. I took Laney and said let's record this song together, and she agreed. But we haven't done that yet.”
It's safe to say that Wilson has been busy lately, having just released her new album, Tornado. Johnson, whose song 'Dirt Cheap' is in the top 10 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart, also revealed that another country music A-lister, Luke Combs, had been up on 'Dirt Cheap' – but Johnson reached first.
Johnson said of Combs, “It didn't click with him. So there you go Luke! He didn't hear it until I released it. He thought the title sounded familiar. I talked about it next — I had a few picks to say about “Dirt Cheap.” I said, “Everything happens for a reason.”
Johnson recently headlined a rodeo in Brazil at the Cowboy festival Barretos. “They called me and we sold the thing,” he said. “This is very nice.” The festival has been around since the 1950s and has previously featured headliners such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Shakira, Mariah Carey and Shania Twain.
