“Berlin” is a triumph. The track starts with a rolling drum intro that sounds like Something Corporate's 'Punk Rock Princess'. It leans on a heavy bass line and perfectly cut harmony guitar, which result in an all-around dark and atmospheric post-punk sound (think Joy Division with the Editors). The tension is built into the track with atmospheric pauses, which creates a sense of massive tempo. Throughout the track, the interplay of bass, harmonizing guitar, and snare-focused beats make you feel like you're growing stronger with them. It's one hell of an intro for their upcoming album. If you loved Interpol from the beginning, “Berlin” is for you. Even the vocals have a dull Paul Banks tone.
In 1979, Martin Hannett (Producer) once described Joy Division as “dance music with gothic undertones”. NME described Editors as “dark disco”. Both of these descriptions have similarities to “Berlin”. I plan to play it on repeat until their album comes out.
