Shawn Mendes has admitted Camila Cabello is the first person he’d call in a crisis.
The Canadian singer-songwriter and Havana hitmaker first began dating in July 2019 but split in November 2021.
Shawn and Camila are still occasionally photographed spending time together, and in an interview for The New York Times published on Thursday, the Stitches star insisted he remains on great terms with his ex-girlfriend.
He also declared that any public perception suggesting they are “against each other in a weird way” greatly irritates him.
“I have nerves just even speaking about it, just what people would say. But honestly, if something was to happen in my family and if something was to happen to me, she’d probably be the first person I call, to this day,” the 26-year-old said.
In addition, Shawn indicated Camila taught him a lot about love and considers her to be “one of my closest best friends”.
“Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a big way,” he added.
Elsewhere in the interview, Shawn reflected on his decision to cancel the Wonder: The World Tour in 2022 amid struggles with his mental health.
While the Isn’t That Enough artist could “find beauty” in performing, he couldn’t “recognise” himself after the gig.
But after time away from the spotlight, Shawn maintained he is in a much better place as he prepares to drop his self-titled fifth studio album.
“Healing takes time,” he mused. “More than you want. And it’s beautiful, because you can be healing and expressing at the same time. You can be joyful and grieving simultaneously.”
Shawn’s new album is set to be released on 15 November.
