Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello may not be together as a couple anymore, but they will always be in each other's lives.
In a new interview with Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe published Thursday (November 14), the Canadian singer-songwriter opened up about his lifelong friendship with the “Havana” musician, whom he dated from 2019 to 2021 before rekindling — and quickly ending — their romance in 2023. “I just think we really know each other,” she said.
“I think we haven't been the closest in the last couple of years, but I think we're really getting to know each other,” he continued. “We've spent a lot of time together. We really know each other's hearts. So even with all the sound and all the noise, we can see each other very easily, and it's just nice to have that.”
Both Mendes and Cabello have been increasingly open about their past relationship over the past year, with the latter confirming the She called her dad in March that they briefly tried to reconnect romantically before breaking up for the second time. “I will always care and love him. He is such a good person,” she said at the time. “I'm lucky because some people have exes who are awful, and he's not. He's a really kind, good person.”
In September, Mendes added to the conversation by telling the Jay Shetty Podcast which he and Campello “maintained [their] private little fire of love for each other.” When a fan tweeted after the episode, “they're not playing for each other” — in reference to the former flames — the “Mercy” singer replied to X, “no we don't.”
Afterwards, when fans asked him to clarify what he meant, Mendes added, “I guess to be honest it came from a place where I was a little bit annoyed with all the publicity the last few months for us. I'm usually pretty good at seeing all the 'noise' through but lately it's been kind of bothering me 🤷🏻♂️ I guess I feel human.”
Mendes' interview with Lowe comes a day before his fifth studio album, Sean. The LP was originally supposed to be released on October 18, but was pushed back to November 15, nine days before its originally scheduled release. The project will follow in 2020 Wonderwhich debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
