Electronic art and music artist Anne Wichmann took a short break from her multimedia She's Excited! project in 2023 to focus on her single rock project with her brother Volker. Initially a combination of rock and darkwave electronica, SuperWAV took a new direction towards metal-studded analog and noise rock with the brothers' second offering, atypical, released in October 2023. Unable to stay away, Anne has ridden that dark wave again with her new She's Excited! offering, Sonder moments.
Released just under four months after SuperWAV. aTypical moments of the survey continues where the last She is excited! album, Shock therapy, Stopped. Also a very clear concept album, the emotions and philosophies contained in it. Sonder Moments They are gentler and more esoteric than those expressed in its predecessor. The music, while still darkwave at its core, also expresses that softness and connection of the human experience. Where Shock therapy lived up to its name with dissonant tones, deep vocals and experimental workmanship, Sonder Moments It also channels its name with melodic tones that instill a sense of wonder. The concept of this concept. is According to Wichmann, the sonder itself.
'Moments Of Sonder' is a concept album around the phenomenon of “probe”, an instant understanding that every person has a life as complex and complicated as yours. I invite listeners to walk with me through New York City (or any city of your dreams): we will look at the skyscrapers and wonder what lives unfold behind the millions of windows. We'll walk to the subway and take a walk with Mellon Collie. We will meet amazing people and hear wonderful and sometimes difficult stories, listen to them briefly as we pass by and then move on. I hope everyone finds their own probing moment in music.
Given the title and concept of the album, it makes sense that in Sonder moments, Almost every track is a collaboration. With the emotional opening, “Celebrity Parade”, a concept within a concept in which Wichmann presents the perspectives of all the other artists through his own perspective. All of these other complex worlds, in fact, exist within Wichmann's own “probing moment.” It's almost a visceral experience, standing inside the mirror ball of Wichmann's own perspective, looking here and there to see each track with each artist telling his own story. They are vignettes from the complex worlds of others, but they are not yet the whole story.
Embracing this “sonder” concept also allows for an incredible diversity of sound and even style that you wouldn't normally get on another collaborative album. Each track is as different as the world it represents. trap artist ComputerThe theme of “All I Need”, for example, is melodic, desolate and emotional, while the following song, “Alone Together”, with Joana Brabo is a spooky musique concrete style spoken word on a loop. The album runs the gamut from aforementioned trap to post punk, house music and trip hop, with cheeky nods to vintage adult contemporary. It's all meant to offer different views, and that point on the probe stands out with each passing track.
Sonder Moments It's as complex a concept as one can try to fit into an album, but with the way Wichmann has crafted it, it doesn't seem so abstract. With the idea that “sonder” is just a flash of consciousness, this album urges the listener to stay in that feeling and experience another perspective, and another, and another, until it doesn't feel so strange. After all, we are all connected and feeling that on such a literal level can never be a bad thing. It could even be the next step in the evolution of human consciousness. One would expect nothing less than such an intricate offering from an artist like Wichmann.
Sonder Moments is now available and can be streamed on Spotify.
