A couple of days into the ShipRocked cruise, strong winds and ocean waves caused the Carnival Magic ship to crash into a dock in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Tuesday (February 6). The incident derailed the ship's itinerary, forcing the cancellation of a planned stop in Grand Cayman.
The cruise, which set sail from Miami on Saturday (February 4), features performances by I Prevail, Killswitch Engage, Beartooth, Highly Suspect, Badflower and more. The ship wasn't even supposed to dock in Jamaica until Wednesday, but she headed toward land a day early due to strong winds and rough waters at sea.
The Carnival Magic ship docked at 8:10 am and let several passengers spend the day in Ocho Rios. Unfortunately, around 11:00 am, the dock began to collapse under the pressure of the wind and waves, causing the boat to crash into the dock, causing notable damage to the dock and boat.
Due to the dangerous situation, the Carnival Magic had to wait until another cruise ship departed from another dock. Eventually, passengers who had been grounded were able to reboard the ship several hours later in the evening.
Carnival Cruises issued the following statement:
“Carnival Magic was involved in an incident while in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Tuesday morning, February 6, when high winds and waves caused the dock fender to collapse under pressure and the ship made contact with the dock. The ship was docked at 8:10 a.m. and the incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. There were no injuries and all ship services remained operational. The ship left the area for the safety of everyone on board and then docked at another nearby dock so guests who disembarked Tuesday morning could join the ship. Guests who were on land at the time were cared for by the Carnival team and shore excursion partners. Given the weather conditions in the region, Carnival Magic will remain in Ocho Rios on Tuesday night. “His visit to Grand Cayman is canceled for Wednesday.”
Musical performances on the ship appear to continue, as fans wait for news on an updated itinerary. Consequence Photographer Amy Harris is currently on the ShipRocked cruise ship and sent us the video and photo gallery of the damage below.
