As a Detroit native, Skilla Baby has his thoughts on the city's best rappers.
The musician joined the This is Keke Palmer podcast as a guest recently, where he took issue with the idea that Eminem is the best rapper from Detroit. “I don't know why if you think Eminem is the best rapper in Detroit,” Skilla explained. “But the gag is that no one would say that in Detroit.”
A surprised Palmer replied, “Now that's tea, boo,” before asking him who his “top rappers” are.
“I don't know why everyone had their turn to be Detroit's favorite rapper,” he replied. “Sada Baby had his turn, Tee Grizzley had his turn, [42] Doug had a turn, Babyface Ray had a turn. Veeze is one of the best rappers in Detroit right now. Baby Smoove, Big Kizz – many artists had their turn. Rocaine… They all had their turn to be the best in town but what we lack is consistency. No one was consistently the best Detroit rapper.”
He concluded, “No one in Detroit is playing Eminem right now,” before adding, “I was an Eminem fan as a kid. I'm a fan of Eminem but do we consider him our best rapper? I don't think Detroit does.”
Eminem is set to release his 12th studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace)on July 12. The album was accompanied by the single “Houdini”, which gave him his biggest Hot 100 hit of the decade, as the track debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
