Snoop Dogg remained neutral during the rap battle that broke out earlier this year between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Still, he's a big fan of the latter's knockout “Not Like Us.”
Sitting next to Dr. Dre during a recent session with Drink Champs in Vegas at ComplexCon, Snoop said Kendrick's anthem united not only West Coast rappers, but also rival gangs.
“Let me tell you what this record did. Unite the West,” he said. “Well, it might have been disrespectful, but it's hip-hop, so it's part of hip-hop. I chose no side because I have no individual cause. This is an adult going against an adult. But what it did do was unite the West and make everybody out here start looking at each other like how much love we had for each other.”
He added, “The Bloods had a peace treaty. You had certain Crip gangs come together and become real friends as opposed to being enemies. So that record did a lot for us in the West in terms of the union, so we should talk about that.”
he said something similar after Kendrick's Pop Out concert in June. “Sending a big shout out to K. Dot and all the friends in the West who stood together, united, organized in peace, love,” he said in a video while in Canada. “It was beautiful, it was fun to watch. It is beautiful to see all my people come together. And K. Dot, you are the King of the West. That's the kind of kings, who unite, bring people together.”
Snoop was inadvertently brought into the fray early on when Drake decided to release “Taylor Made Freestyle” with AI versions of Snoop and 2Pac's vocals in order to get a response from Kendrick. That plan fell through, however, as the Tupac Shakur estate threatened to sue, forcing the Toronto rapper to take down the song.
The West Coast legend had a funny response once he caught the diss track, video post on social media to ask questions and get confused. “What did they do? When; How; Are you sure? Have a good evening,” he said. “Why is everyone calling my phone and blasting me? what the fk? What happened? What's going on? I go back to bed. Good night.”
Snoop and Dre are teaming up once again and releasing an album soon. Missionary will hit shelves on December 13th.
