This past weekend (May 16-19), Sonic Temple 2024 took place at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, giving music fans the chance to bow at an altar adorned with hard-hitting riffs, towering stacks of amps and corpse paint. As in any good religious service, prayers were shouted, communion was of beer and fried food, and the sense of community was palpable. For four days, attendees walked alongside the spirit of rock.
The weekend offered crowd-pleasing set after set, from headliners (slipknot, Pantera, The Original Misfits and Disturbed) to late afternoon favorites (Limp Bizkit, Cypress Hill, Mr. Bungle, 311). and the generation of enthusiasm. newcomers (Nova Twins, The Chats, Militarie Gun, Scowl). With representation from a wide variety of hard rock subgenres, walking from stage to stage offered a varied and exciting experience that ultimately kept the programming fresh throughout the extended weekend.
Despite a brief rain shower and some harsh spells of intense sunshine, the vibes of locals and campers alike seemed to remain high, an energy that translated into many of the sets. “Fuck yes, Sonic Temple!” It was a battle cry frequently used when gangs pumped up the crowd and called for circles or walls of death. That energy continued to grow with each passing day, culminating in a final Slipknot set in which the worms left absolutely nothing on the table.
For those who couldn't hear the cries of “Fuck yeah!” In person, here's a summary of what happened at Sonic Temple 2024:
