Thirty years after the Spice Girls formed, sparking a wave of Girl Power that spread around the world, the classic line-up will reunite for a project.
Although details remain under lock and key, founding member Mel B let the news slip during her appearance on Tuesday (January 9). TODAY with Hoda & Jenna.
When asked about the chances of a Spice Girls reunion, Mel B (real name Melanie Brown) told Hoda Kotb, “I've been saying it forever. But now we will be releasing some very good news in a few weeks involving all five.”
A reunion is not stingy, he continues. “We're five, five separate calendars, we're all parents.”
The famous five are, of course, Baby (Emma Bunton), Posh (Victoria Beckham), Ginger (Geri Halliwell-Horner), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm) and Scary Spice (Mel B) – an outfit that reached the No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic during a hot streak in the late 1990s.
Will the Spicemaniacs be satisfied with what comes next? Obviously yes. “100%,” enthuses Mel B. “And it's going to be the gift that keeps on giving, without saying much about it. I'm going to get myself into so much trouble.”
The Spice Girls formed in 1994 and became a global phenomenon two years later with their 1996 debut single 'Wannabe'. The catchy track spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1997 and is one of the group's nine No. 1 singles. “Wannabe” is still going strong, passing one billion streams on Spotify during the recent holiday season. The Brits' debut LP Spice spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and 15 weeks at the summit of the UK Official Albums Chart (continued Spiceworld recorded three weeks at No.1 in the UK in 1997).
It takes something special to pick up the girls. The last time the five performed together was for the London Olympics in 2012, although the pop star hit the road for a tour in 2019, doing so as a four-piece without Victoria Beckham.
The Spice Girls reunited in 2022 for Geri's 50th birthday, an event that doubled as their 25th anniversary Spiceworld, their second album. Geri had left the band in 1998 to pursue a solo career, but returned in 2007 for Return of the Spice Girls tour.
In addition to the Reunion talk, Mel B used her tenure on Today with Hoda & Jenna couch to discuss her return to AMERICA has talent the jury, her MBE, her book, her upcoming wedding and the Royal Mail's special Spice Girls stamp collection. “It's huge,” he says of the new stamp issue. “For Royal Mail, it's usually the Queen and the King” on the stamps. “And now it's the Spice Girls.”
