Spotify ventures into new territory by testing emergency alerts, TechnologyCrunch reports.
The feature, which was initially discovered by technologist Chris Messina, is being considered as a way to make Spotify a more essential app for its users. The technology, which reportedly includes a feature to broadcast public announcements about local accidents and serious events, is currently being tested in the company's home market of Sweden.
Messina believes that the streaming giant will encourage users to enable push notifications for its app, making it more necessary. According to TechnologyCrunchUsers often disable alerts on “non-essential” apps, making it harder to capture users' attention when marketing new features.
“At Spotify, we routinely run a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” a Spotify representative said. TechnologyCrunch“Some of those tests end up paving the way for a broader user experience, while most just serve as important learning.”
It remains to be seen whether the emergency alert feature will eventually be rolled out to Spotify’s global user base. The company has yet to officially reveal the feature at the time of writing.
