Luckily, the music was as memorable as ever. Billie Eilish deepened her sound with the style Hit me hard and softand Vince Staples adopted a changing color palette in dark times. We also received fantastic later albums from Mdou Moctar, DIIV and Shellac, whose LP To all trains served as a gripping posthumous document of Steve Albini's brilliance.
Listed in alphabetical order, here are the best albums of May 2024 selected by Consequence writers and editors.
Another Miguel… Pick me up, turn me upside down
Another Michael is back with his second album in less than a year, and it's packed with some of his most majestic songs to date. His last album seemed like he could be your best friend, but this one is a little more tense, like the grainy resolution of Pick me upThe album cover. Still, the Philadelphia band hasn't lost its sense of fantasy or wisdom, finding moments of healthy beauty filled with simple phrases or evocative details. Pick me up, turn me upside down is as charming as ever, showing that Other Michael is at the peak of his powers. — Paolo Ragusa

Billie Eilish— HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
Billie Eilish has always been inventive, but she's never felt more comfortable than on her new studio album. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. The project has a lovely flow and there are more than a few highlights – the “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” hive let me hear you!
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT Overall, it features a particularly excellent vocal performance from Eilish. She is gentle and fascinating in moments like “WILDFLOWER,” shy and playful in “LUNCH,” and explosive in “THE GREATEST” in a way reminiscent of “Happier Than Ever.” As a whole, the album is a showcase of an artist still on the rise. — M.
