Stephen Colbert isn't proud of some jokes he made about Kate Middleton's whereabouts before her cancer diagnosis was revealed.
On The Late Show On Monday, the comedian spoke for two minutes about the Princess of Wales and how she “doesn't make light of someone else's tragedy” as he acknowledged that some of his jokes about Middleton “upset some people”. (He didn't apologize.)
“I tell jokes about a lot of different things, mostly the ones that everybody's talking about,” Colbert began in his 2-minute speech. “And for the last six weeks to two months, everyone has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton's disappearance from public life.”
“When I made those jokes that upset some people even before her diagnosis was revealed. I can understand that… But there's a standard that I try to hold myself to, and that's that I don't make light of somebody else's tragedy,” Colbert continued, later adding, “A lot of us know that any cancer diagnosis of any kind is painful for the patient and his family.”
During an earlier episode, Colbert had joked that Prince William was having an affair, and it seemed to get mixed reactions from the audience.
“Though I'm sure they don't need it from me, me and everyone here The Late Showwould like to express our best wishes and our sincere hope that her recovery is speedy and thorough,” he said on Monday.
Middleton shared a video on Friday revealing that she had been diagnosed with cancer, ending rampant gossip and conspiracy theories — fueled by apparent Photoshopping — about her well-being in the face of her public absence.
Middleton said that after her “scheduled” abdominal surgery on Jan. 16, “The surgery was successful. However, the tests after the cancer operation were present.'
“This, of course, came as a huge shock,” he continued. “Both William and I are doing our best to process it and manage it privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this took time. It took me time to recover from major surgery to begin my treatment. But most importantly, it took us time to explain everything [our children] George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that suits them and to reassure them that I'll be fine.”
