Tool are in the middle of a US stadium tour, kicking off in Baltimore on Wednesday night (January 10). The tour came to New York City on Friday (January 12) and Saturday (January 13) for two sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden, marking the band's first shows at the legendary venue since 2001. will continue until a final stop in Las Vegas on February 18 (get tickets here).
As has been his practice since the release of his fifth studio album, Inoculum of fear, in 2019, Tool began their set with the powerful title track. The New York crowd was thrilled by the song's intense build-up, with layers of pulsating drum and bass expertly executed by drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor. The chilling guitar tones, a trademark of guitarist Adam Jones, added to the immersive experience, all complemented by vocalist Maynard James Keenan's hypnotic chorus lines.
Hidden in the shadows, and occasionally pacing either side of Carey's drum pad, the ever-mysterious Maynard introduced the band's next song, “The Pot,” with its recognizable lyrics: “Who are you to shake your finger? ” The crowd reciprocated in return, repeating: “You must have been crazy.”
The band's imposing presence was enhanced and amplified by a colossal LED video wall placed behind them, displaying Tool's beloved psychedelic visuals that fans have come to love. Keenan also emphasized that Tool shows are phone-free experiences, urging fans to put away their “damn phones” and stay present and connected to the band.
Tool’s main set featured masterful performances of “Rosetta Stoned,” “Pneuma,” “Intolerance,” “Descending,” and “The Grudge.” The band also provided an intermission for fans to relieve themselves, grab some merchandise, and refill their drinks.
Returning, and with a massive gong now placed stage left, Carey delved into the intricate instrumental track “Chocolate Chip Trip,” which features her rich synthesis and heavy elements. As the rest of the band returned to the stage, they pleasantly surprised the audience with a rare performance of “Flood” by Hangoversong that the band has not played live since 2011.
