Swedish psychology wonder MaidaVale announced her new album, sun dog, which will be released on May 3. On the long-awaited third studio album, the mesmerizing Matilda Roth, Sofia Ström, Linn Johannesson and Johanna Hansson bring the band's essence – vibrant interplay, raw vocals, captivating rhythms and innovative guitar – into a collection of songs more colorful and ecstatic.
Featuring lead single 'Faces [Where is Life]' available worldwide today, MaidaVale takes the listener straight to the point with the most danceable song on the album, bolstered with additional percussion from Said Ag Ayad (Tinariwen). “It talks about losing control and the need to discover life and belonging”says singer Matilda Roth.
Continuing to record most of the takes live, the band found a completely new spark in the recording process at Svenska Grammofonstudion with producers Kalle Gustafsson Jerneholm (TSOOL, Josefin Öhrn, Håkan Hellström) and György Barocsai, highlighting the strong characteristics of the band. John Agnello (The Black Angels, Kurt Vile) adds the final touch, guest mixing one of the album's standout songs.
Listen to 'Faces [Where is Life]' – BELOW:
Without losing sight of their bold and experimental krautrock influences, shown especially on the band's second album, The madness is too pure, sun dog allows the melodies to take another step into the spotlight. With Matilda Roth's soulful yet dynamic vocal performance at the center, the lyrics explore different aspects of difficulties in human interaction and reflect on internal conflicts and longings. Sofia Ström's playful guitar with heavy fuzz and analog echo creates a dazzling soundscape, capturing the energy of the band's acclaimed live performances. Influences on the album that can be traced include Can, Dungen, Stereolab, Jefferson Airplane and early Tame Impala.
'Sun Dog' is the band's first release on their newly formed Silver Dagger record label.
