R&B singer-songwriter SZA is taking a hiatus from her live performances for the foreseeable future.
The “Kill Bill” singer made the announcement on social media after her headlining performance at Montreal's Osheaga festival on August 5.
“Yesterday was my last show for a while,” SZA wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Finally fighting to get my life together, thank God.”
The unexpected news comes after an extensive run of shows and tour dates for the Grammy-winning artist.
SZA has been on the road since early 2023, performing 63 shows around the world for her warning sign tour before embarking on a packed summer festival. Recent high-profile gigs have included Lollapalooza in Chicago, Glastonbury in the UK and her most recent appearance at Osheaga.
Despite the departure from the stage, fans should not worry about the lack of new music. During her Lollapalooza set, SZA debuted an unreleased track called “Cry Baby,” telling the crowd, “It's not out, but it will be.”
He has also teased a new project called Woolwhich he says will include previously unheard material.
“It will drop leaks and exits from warning sign as promised deluxe as soon as possible,” SZA shared with X in March. “Lana deserves more time and music that no one has ever heard before.” He has also previously hinted at a possible collaboration with Paramore.
SZA's creative juices keep flowing even when she takes a break from performing. She recently shared her admiration for her fellow artists on Instagram, most notably posting about Chappell Roan's performance at Lollapalooza.
“Makes me want to keep making new music and art forever,” SZA wrote in a video.
The singer's decision to take a break comes at a time when she is at the height of her commercial and critical success.
Her second album warning sign, released in December 2022, was a chart powerhouse. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has shown remarkable staying power.
SZA's chart dominance extends beyond albums. Her single “Kill Bill” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2023, becoming her first chart-topper as a solo artist. The track showed staying power on the charts, spending many weeks in the top 10.
