With 1.4 million copies sold across all CD, vinyl, cassette and digital download versions of the album, Department of Tormented Poets puts together the best-selling week for any Swift album. Previously, her biggest sales week was recorded by the week her re-recording began 1989 (Taylor Edition) last year, when it sold 1.359 million copies.
Department of Tormented Poets (abbreviated as TTPD) was originally released on April 19 as a standard 16-song digital download album, as well as a series of 17-song physical formats (more details on the various editions later in this story). Two hours after the album's release, Swift announced an expanded 31-song version of the set and released it as a download and streaming digital album. She wrote: “It's a surprise at 2am: Department of Tormented Poets it's a secret DOUBLE album. I had written so much tortured poetry over the last 2 years and I wanted to share it all with you, so here is the second part of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 additional songs. And now the story is no longer mine… it's all yours.”
The sales of Department of Tormented Poets will increase over the next few days, with the current tracking week ending on Thursday, April 25. The album's final first-week sales numbers are expected to be announced on Sunday, April 28, along with its presumed big debut on the multimetric Billboard 200 album chart (dated May 4). If Department of Tormented Poets Debuting atop the Billboard 200, it will mark Swift's 14th No. 1 album, extending her record for most by a woman. He would also tie Jay-Z for the most No. 1s among solo artists. The only act with more than 14 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 is The Beatles, with 19.

Sales history: The 1.4 million sales figure recorded for the album includes both over-the-counter and download purchases from Department of Tormented Poets which took place on April 19, in addition to a possible large number of pre-orders of the album through online retailers that were sent to customers for arrival on the day of release. Swift announced the album during the Grammy Awards on February 4, and her official online store began accepting pre-orders for the project on the same day.
After one day on sale, Department of Tormented Poets is the best-selling album of 2024 year-over-year in the US, surpassing Beyoncé's 188,000 sales Cowboy Carter until the week ending April 11.
