Rapper 6ix9ine is back in federal custody. A court document shows the musician was arrested for allegedly violating the terms of his supervised release. (The offense was not specified.) He was also scheduled to have a hearing in a New York court this afternoon.
Pitchfork has reached out to the public information officer for the United States Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York for more information. Pitchfork also emailed Lance Lazarro and Dawn M. Florio, the attorneys who represented 6ix9ine in his federal case, for comment and information.
Musician 6ix9ine, who is also known as Tekashi69 and whose legal name is Daniel Hernandez, was arrested in November 2018, along with other alleged members of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods on firearms and racketeering conspiracy charges. He initially pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges, but famously reversed course by accepting a cooperation agreement, pleading guilty and testifying against his co-defendants. He was sentenced to two years in prison with five years of supervised release, but was released from federal custody earlier than expected near the start of the pandemic due to health concerns.
The rapper released an album, Dummy Boysoon after his arrest in 2018, and continued his music career after his release with the single 'Gooba'. His next single, the Nicki Minaj collaboration “Trollz,” climbed to the top of the charts. More tracks and projects followed, but 6ix9ine has struggled to replicate his commercial success in recent years.
Earlier this year, 6ix9ine was was arrested in the Dominican Republic for domestic violence.
