A South Carolina man identified as the king of an African village was stabbed Monday (July 29) and later succumbed to his injuries. Police have arrested the suspect, but details remain largely under wraps as the village prepares to give the leader a proper burial.
Oba Adegbolu Abiogemo Adejuyigbe Egunjobi Oyewole Adefunmi II was its king African village of Oyotunji, located near Sheldon, Beaufort County in South Carolina. Oyotunji was founded in 1970 by Oba Efuntola Oseijeman Adelabu Adefunmi I.
According to a local media report WJCLAccording to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office communications team, reports of Monday's stabbing came in around 2:45 a.m. local time. Adefunmi was taken to a local hospital and died from the stab wounds.
A suspect, Akiba Kasale Meredith, 53, was located by authorities and is now facing murder charges. According to accounts provided by BCSO officials, Meredith fled the area on foot, but was later arrested after returning to the crime scene. The motive has not been ascertained.
Officials at the Oyotunji African Village site decided to speak to the press after completing proper burial services for Adefunmi.
Oba Adegbolu Abiogemo Adejuyigbe Egunjobi Oyewole Adefunmi II was 47 years old.
