The title of Gorgon City's new album is just one word, but it says everything we need to know.
Is called Dreamthe term we use to describe our state when we feel pleasantly lost in our own thoughts. But when it comes to raves, where reaching that state of mind should be second nature, we live in an age where the compulsion to share our moments with the world prevents us from fully inhabiting them.
Presence has become a lost art in the age of likes, shares and all the other hollow social media interactions that release serotonin instead of music. DreamWhere presence is measured in sweat rather than digital validation, Gorgon City mutates their sound and challenges listeners to connect with rawer club beats than ever before.
His transformation is both disconcerting and stimulating. Dream finds Gorgon City trading velvet gloves for brass fists, discarding their familiar, melancholic anthems in favor of hedonistic club hits designed for reckless abandon.
It all comes in an instant thanks to album opener “Are You Feeling It Too?”, which glows like a lit match in a dark room, illuminating the hidden corners of the duo’s sound with shades of techno brilliance. They dive even deeper into the underground on “Make It Happen,” an acid-fueled collaboration with iconic Chicago dance music producer DJ Pierre; and “You Know It,” a grimy, unabashed house track.
Hardcore Gorgon City fans will find solace in the sublime “Landslide,” an undeniable highlight where Poppy Baskcomb’s haunting vocals reflect the unstoppable force of a psyche in decline. Her lyricism, a postcard from an emotional freefall, fascinatingly confronts the very concept of daydreaming and leaves us wondering if we can ever achieve it.
The duo then extends an outstretched hand with “Keep Your Head Up,” an uplifting track where long, tense build-up phases blur the line between ecstasy and exhaustion. Together with house music veteran Harry Romero, they produce a track that hits like a midnight drive in the middle of a thunderstorm: urgent yet hypnotic.
“We wanted to come back with a club-focused album and once we were asked to headline the Yuma tent at Coachella, it was the perfect catalyst to do so at that show and in that environment,” Gorgon City explained in a press release. “It all came together pretty quickly and we loved the reactions we got to the tracks in our DJ sets.”
