AMP is honored to premiere The Stone Eye”Sudden new part in the world. Additionally, singer/guitarist Stephen Burdick gives AMP this exclusive interview discussing the new release.
AMP: Can you give our readers a brief history of the band?
STEPHANOS: The Stone Eye was founded in 2014 while myself (Stephen) and Jeremiah were in High School. Only a few kids play music, with a strong love for stoner rock, grunge and progressive rock. Ten years later and a bunch of albums later, the band's DNA remains the same!
AMP: Your music crosses a variety of genres. How would you describe your sound?
STEPHANOS: I honestly think I would classify the music as alternative rock because, like you said, it tends to cross genres. One song can be folk and the next metal. So yeah, to keep things simple, I tell people its alternative rock.
AMP: “High Frequency Hog” is your new single that we're premiering here today. Can you give us some insight into the song?
STEPHANOS: So “High Frequency Hog” is the first track we wrote with our new bass player, Jacob. It started like most of our songs do. We had a single riff that everyone thought was “cool” and we ended up building a song around it. The actual creative process was pretty seamless as I don't think the song really took more than a few hours to formulate. Stylistically, I really enjoy “High Frequency Hog” as it continues our “transcending genre” part by implementing post-hardcore elements, which I believe is a first for us.
AMP: How does the band dynamic work?
STEPHANOS: Generally, the formula our band follows is that I (Stephen) have an idea/plan, and then I present it to everyone and we discuss the pros and cons of said idea and go from there. That's how it works for basically everything – business-wise and creativity-wise.
AMP: Can you give us a glimpse into your creative process?
STEPHANOS: The creative process essentially involves myself coming up with an idea, sharing it with the boys, and then we flesh out the idea, each contributing their own flair to the idea/bringing their own ideas to the plate. For example, on High Frequency Hog there are about six unique riffs in the song. I was involved in four of the riffs, Jacob contributed one and Jeremiah contributed one.
AMP: Who are some of the band's inspirations?
STEPHANOS: Everything and anything. From Katie Perry to John Fahey to Tool. There are no limits.
AMP: What do you think makes The Stone Eye unique?
STEPHANOS: What is he doing The Stone Eye unique is what we've touched on before – the ability (shamelessly, I might add) to combine a multitude of disparate ideas into a cohesive product. I mean, right now we're talking about the hypothetical scenario where we do an acoustic folk album with hip hop beats. Why not;
AMP: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
STEPHANOS: If I could work with anyone, it would probably be Dean Ween. He just seems like a really cool and down-to-earth guy who also has a similar mindset when it comes to the creative process. Why not throw a million ideas into the blender and see what happens?
AMP: What do you want your fans to take away from your music?
STEPHANOS: Honestly, I just want people to enjoy it and come to their own conclusions/make their own meanings out of what we're doing. We put a lot of time (and pride) into our product, and the most rewarding part of it when it's all said and done is seeing people's reactions. That's what makes making music cool.
AMP: What's next for Stone Eye?
STEPHANOS: New music! We have a few more tracks coming out this summer. We're also about to start the creative process again, so expect new music for the rest of the year. From there, just the regular gigs, gigs and more gigs!
