Every year, we celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a playlist of hits curated for our readers.
For 2024, Advertising sign done, gathering the best songs from our playlists over the years, including patriotic songs, party anthems, rock, mariachi, pop and band — to make sure there's something for everyone.
While many believe this very festive date is just about partying and good food, it actually commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. And while Cinco de Mayo is not independence of Mexico (this is celebrated on September 16th), here in the US it is celebrated with as much—if not more—push.
It consists of 20 songs, Advertising signThe ultimate Cinco de Mayo playlist starts with a mariachi classic: “Cielito Lindo.” It is almost impossible to celebrate Cinco de Mayo without “Cielito Lindo”. And while there are thousands of versions of “Cielito,” you can't go wrong with this one powered by Mariachi Vargas.
You'll also find “El Último Adiós” by Paulina Rubio, because there's no better way to drown your sorrows and heartache than with tequila and mariachi, Paulina Rubio-style (which means mariachi don't wear shirts – only her can do it). Of course, there's Thalia's “Amor a la Mexicana” — a sultry, pop cumbia that celebrates love, Mexican-style. And, towards the end, you have to play “Tragos Amargos” by Ramón Ayala. Because a real Mexican party always ends with this norteño anthem.
So, get out your favorite bottle of tequila or mezcal and get ready to party!
