Young Thug will remain behind bars with his co-defendants after the new judge overseeing the YSL RICO trial denied class-action bond. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whittaker also rejected requests by prosecutors to issue gag orders to attorneys from speaking to the media.
As reported by Atlanta Journal-ConstitutionYoung Thug's attorney, Brian Steel, told the court that his client is living in squalid conditions in Cobb County and asked that the rapper be released and placed under house arrest during a bond dispute.
In response, Judge Whitaker told the defense team for Young Thug and his co-defendants, “I'm not going to revisit any bond issues that have already been heard and decided by another court without a legal change of circumstances.”
Whitaker appeared after Chief Judge Ural Glanville resigned over a former meeting held in secret in June with prosecutors and a state witness. Running for 19 months now, the trial remains the biggest Georgia court story, but Whittaker promises to move things along.
“It won't take another seven months,” Whitaker told lawyers during a hearing on the motion on Tuesday (July 30).
Prosecutors told the court they would seek to call 105 witnesses to the stand. Whittaker is ordering the state to prepare a list of evidence in relation to the next 30 witnesses they plan to call.
Further, AJC added in his report that the judge is reviewing the case to decide whether or not to proceed with the case against Young Thug and his five co-defendants. Four defense attorneys have filed malpractice suits, while two have been dismissed by Whitaker so far.
