Swedish electronic music producer SAMAKO has taken the cryptic rhythms of military Morse code and woven them into synthwave.
Music may be a universal language, but for SAMAKO it is also a means to decode hidden messages. With his new track, “Code (2024 Remastered Version)”, the Stockholm-based artist has artfully transformed Morse code into a pulsating club banger, combining the secrecy of shortwave radio with the raw energy of the dance floor .
SAMAKO says it was able to use WebSDR technology to capture abstruse radio signals transmitted in Morse code by French military “facilities,” including doorbells and encrypted messages. These signals, which he converted to MIDI using Ableton, became the building blocks of the song.
“The shortwave signals sent in Morse code from the French facility had a constant rhythm,” he explains. “Since they were fairly clean signals, they translated perfectly to MIDI.”
From there, SAMAKO sculpted the sound, shaping its production to reflect and maintain the mysterious resonance of the original signals. The result is an arrangement of powerful arpeggios and dark synths that come together with precision.
