The producers at TNT's Inside the NBA they must be from Los Angeles, because they keep playing West Coast diss tracks. During Wednesday's (May 1) broadcast, Drake's Kendrick Lamar's song 'Euphoria' could be heard playing faintly in the background as Shaq, Kenny, Chuck and Ernie prepared for halftime of the Clippers' playoff game and the Mavericks.
Commentator Kenny Smith can be seen shaking his head in disbelief as he questions why the producers were picking sides. “We're in the middle of rap beef, man,” he says. “Come on man. We'll play one side, you gotta play the other side now.”
Shaq, on the other hand, was into it and called out DJ Denzel for the song choice. Meanwhile, Charles Barkley was disgusted by the whole concept of rap beef as he shook his head and said: “Grow up men.” Ernie Johnson was none the wiser.
This wasn't the first time the show's producers appeared on Kendrick's side. A few weeks ago, they also played the Billboard Hot 100 hit Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick's “Like That.” They played this song again on Wednesday night and added the instrumental for Ice Cube.No Vaseline” for good measure.
One of the show's producers took to X to answer a question from Spotify's Carl Chery about who picks the music there and said, “I'm not a nitpicker, but we talk about it in our team first.”
We would love to be able to listen to one of these meetings. Trolling rap fans is just one of the reasons Inside the NBA is one of the crown jewels of sports television.
