Tom Hamilton has shed some light on the future of Aerosmith following the recent announcement that the legendary band were retiring from touring due to frontman Steven Tyler's vocal injury. One thing the bassist “can't imagine” is Aerosmith going on tour with a new singer.
On August 2, a month before the band was set to begin their rescheduled farewell tour, Aerosmith announced their immediate retirement from touring, stating, “Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made the heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision as a band of brothers to retire from the touring stage.”
In an email interview with Charlie Kendall's Metal ShopHamilton answered some questions about retirement and the future of the band.
First, Hamilton detailed exactly what led to Tyler's injury, saying, “Let me start by clearing up some information regarding Steven's injury. We were playing the third show of our 'Peace Out' tour last September. [at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York]During the third song of the concert, Steven suffered a fall that resulted in a fractured larynx. Somehow he managed to finish the show. Don’t ask me how. It’s a testament to his strength and his desire to give the people what they came for.”
That turned out to be Aerosmith’s last show, as the rest of the tour was postponed and eventually cancelled. Hamilton added: “It wasn’t a case of him blowing his throat out from doing something wrong. He’s been recovering well and working hard to be ready to get back out on the road, but it just wasn’t possible. We don’t know what the future holds, but it won’t include touring.”
The bassist went on to say that the decision to retire from touring “was made by the team that includes the band and our dedicated management team.”
As for the possibility of Aerosmith hiring a new vocalist, Hamilton said: “There has been no talk at all about touring with another singer. I can’t imagine that.”
Although Aerosmith’s touring days are over, Hamilton says he and his bandmates aren’t done making music. “I’m sure we all have music in our future and it’s going to manifest in ways we haven’t planned yet,” the bassist said. “I’ve been playing in a band with some good friends. We have a ton of really good songs and we’re hoping to release them soon and hopefully do some shows.”
