Tyla's 'Water' Reaches No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart

A month after Tyla's “Water” hit No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, the hit topped the Adult R&B Airplay chart dated Feb. 24. The track, released on FAX Records/Epic Records , jumps 4-1 after a 25% increase in plays that made it the most-played song at US adult R&B radio in the tracking week of Feb. 9-15, according to the Luminate. Thanks to its rapid rise, “Water” also takes home the Greatest Gainer award, which is given each week to the song with the biggest increase in plays.

“Water” gives 22-year-old Tyla her first Adult R&B Airplay No. 1 on her first appearance. The breakthrough single is a crossover hit, having dominated the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for eight non-consecutive weeks beginning in December and a week on Rhythmic Airplay that same month. The radio crowns continue a winning streak for the South African singer, who picked up her first Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance – for “Water” – earlier this month.

Elsewhere, “Water” takes its sixth non-consecutive week at No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks songs by total audience on adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations. The single remains essentially flat in the audience compared to last week, but has been knocked off the top by a historic title: SZA's “Snooze” adds an unprecedented 31st week at No. 1 to its dominant streak, the longest command song in the 31 year history of the map.

Bolstering that crossover appeal, “Water” tops the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart for a third week and improves 8% in plays in its final week of tracking. It also holds the No. 8 spot on Pop Airplay for the third consecutive frame, adding 3% more plays over the same period.

With “Water” opening the floodgates, Tyla's second single landed on the radio charts. “Truth or Dare” debuts at No. 40 on Rhythmic Airplay (up 207% on projects) and No. 44 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (173,000 listeners, up 185%). Both “Water” and “Truth or Dare” will appear on the singer's self-titled debut album, which will be released on March 22.
