Victoria Monét won her first Grammy on Sunday night (February 4), beating out Noah Kahan, Jelly Roll and Ice Spice, among others, for the coveted Best New Artist trophy. It also won Best R&B album for Jaguar II and Best Mechanical album, Non-Classical.
In a red carpet interview with Entertainment tonight, Monét saw Ariana Grande's Instagram Story for the first time, in which her longtime friend and musical collaborator gushed about the big win. “Man, you deserve this a million times over,” Grande wrote on her Instagram Stories. “I am so very proud and happy for you that there are no words. You've worked so hard and given so much of yourself to this industry for so, so long while you're quietly in your own league. We've talked about what's been going on since the day we met and a lot of bus guides.”
As soon as he saw the post, Monet started tearing up. “God, I don't want to cry,” she said. “I love you Ari. If you can hear this, I love you so much. Thank you for being loyal and supporting me from the beginning. You knew things that other people didn't and you saw things in me that other people didn't. You've come so far, so this is my love letter to you.”
Monét has co-written some of Grande's biggest hits, including “Thank U, Next,” “Needy” and “Be Alright.” The duo also teamed up for their own collaboration, 2019's “Monopoly.”
