Victoria Monét won best new artist during Sunday's (February 4) Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, beating out top nominees including Noah Kahan, Ice Spice and Jelly Roll.
Monet, who was nominated for seven awards, took the stage to accept the award of all kinds, drawing rapturous applause from the audience. Monet thanked the members of the Recording Academy for voting, saying, “It's because of you. You guys hit that button. We were in your emails. Thank you very much. Thanks to my mom, a single mom raising this very mean girl. Thank you very much. I just want to say to everyone who has a dream, I want you to see this as an example.”
Taking a deep breath he added, “Thank you, God… This award has been a 15-year quest. I moved to Los Angeles in 2009 and I like to liken myself to a plant that was planted. And you can look at the music industry as soil, and you can think of it as dirty, or as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have grown underground unseen for so long. And I feel like today, I'm finally growing above the ground.”
Monet continued, “I would like to thank my team of visionaries who were able to see through this terrain.” She talked about the vision her manager Rachelle Jean-Louis had. “There was a tie-in that I made to take this very important off-label meeting, and I thought I was going to be signed and I was an independent artist without a team, and I just thought, 'Maybe my music can stand on its own.' But that binder went away gathering dust on her desk and a tag, and Rachel found that binder and decided to take a chance, drop that tag and become my manager. So thank you very much for seeing me.”
The best new artist all-genre trophy wasn't the only Grammy Monét took home on Sunday night. Monet's album Jaguar II also won best R&B album. the set also won Best Mechanical album, Non-Classical.
In December, Monét's “On My Mama” reached No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
