Kim Gordon stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform her latest single, “Bye Bye.” Appearing with a live band, Gordon tore through the hazy, synth-laden track with moody fervor.
“Bye Bye” comes from the former Sonic Youth musician's second solo LP, The Collective, which fell in March. The album was produced by Justin Raisen with assistance from Anthony Paul Lopez and follows Gordon's debut solo LP in 2019. No domestic registrationwhich included the songs “Murdered Out”, “AirBnB” and “Don't Play It”.
“It's basically a continuation of the last record, but I wanted this one to be more rhythm-oriented,” Gordon said. Rolling rock of the LP. “Justin is really good at taking sounds and screwing them up. It's kind of punk in that way, disrespecting technology in a way.”
He added: “I never really thought of myself as a musician. I still think of myself more as a visual artist who plays music. I still don't know chords and stuff. But I have realized that I know a few things about music and performance. It's kind of built into me and seems to kick in at the right time. Even before [Sonic Youth ended], I thought, 'Oh, until I'm 40 — that's too old to do that.' But it's a way of life, like blues or jazz people play their whole lives.”
Gordon will tour in support of the album this spring and summer, with dates to be announced in Europe, the UK, Japan and North America through the end of July. In March, he played the Knockdown Center in Queens, New York and brought with him an experienced curation of supporting acts including L'Rain, Kelsey Lu, Bill Nace and Circuit des Yeux.
