Coldplay saved their best surprise for last when the band introduced Sabrina Carpenter during their final show at Radio 1's Big Weekend festival on Sunday. Carpenter joined the band for one of his performances Ghost stories “Magic” track.
“We've been playing this, a Big Weekend since we were basically kids,” Martin told the crowd before introducing Carpenter. “And the reason we're playing on a Big Weekend is because without Radio 1, we'd never have kept our jobs.”
Martin continued: “What we would like to do, to thank you for being so great for all three days, is to bring in a singer who is much younger, more beautiful, more successful, better in every way and sing a The Our song is okay, but it makes it really good.”
Sabrina took the stage to a huge round of applause before harmonizing with Martin on the chorus.
While the crowd was surprised by the unexpected duet, Martin subtly teased the collaboration earlier in the show. While performing “Fix You,” the singer closed the song with a nod to Carpenter's “Espresso” by singing the viral hook “That's that me espresso.”
Along with “Magin,” the band — made up of Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion — played familiar tracks to a chorus of fans on Sunday, including “Viva La Vida,” “Higher Power”, and “Paradise”.
Carpenter also played solo at the three-day festival in Luton, London. During her “Nonsense” outro, which she usually saves for a three-line sexual innuendo, the singer referred to BBC censors for a previous live session in February 2023.
“The BBC said I should keep it PG/ BBC I wish I had it in me/ There's a double meaning if you dig deep,” he said.
