Yasiin Bey took to Instagram Live a few days ago and freestyled over Metro Boomin's “Like That” beat. The socially conscious rapper made his variations of what he called the “Petty Big 3” rap, “Greedy, greedy and creepy/ Corny, horny and boring/ Boogie, stupid and moody/ Stupid, ruthless and clueless/ Variations on a petty big 3/ Much to look at, but not much to see” as he made his comment about those at the top of the game.
The beat is an interesting choice, given that Mighty Mos found themselves in some controversy when they compared Drake's music to “shopping with a tip,” after being asked if he considers the Canadian hip-hop rapper.
Then Drake answered with an old clip of Method Man explaining what hip-hop is:
However, Mos put those comments behind him a short time later on Instagram and stated that he has reached out to Drake, but has yet to hear back. He also challenged his fellow artists to give fans more substance, saying, “What I'd like to see, in terms of creators or creative people in the world as it relates to our culture, is for people to connect with us beyond from the jukebox. or on the track”.
Bey seems to do that with this freestyle and has a history of politically charged music throughout his career.
“Like That” by Future and Metro Boomin featuring Kendrick Lamar is No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been on the chart for eight consecutive weeks.
As Yasiin said in his freestyle: “Why 🤮!”
