Zane stopped The Tonight Show to introduce his latest song, “Alienated”. The performance marked the musician's first televised appearance in eight years and saw Zayn sing to an empty theater alongside his live band, rather than the late-night show's studio in New York.
“Alienated” comes off Zayn's new LP, Room under the stairs, which dropped last week. The musician previously released a single live video performance of the track was filmed in a recording studio to preview the album, revealing the acoustic atmosphere of the LP.
Room under the stairs It was co-produced by Dave Cobb and written over the course of several years at Malik's home in rural Pennsylvania. It marks Malik's first album under his new label Mercury Records.
Zayn has been vocal about the process of writing the LP, noting that it's “my favorite album I've made to date, mostly because it comes from a place of complete honesty and vulnerability.” He added, “I wanted every song to feel like it was just me sitting next to you and telling you how I feel, singing directly to you. It's raw and stripped down and the kind of music I've always hoped to make.”
Ahead of the album's release, the former One Direction member unveiled the single 'What I Am' and an ethereal music video for 'Stardust', which was directed by Frank and Ivanna Borin and sees Zayn as a celestial trapped on Earth , guided by shooting stars as he explores a magical lake and forest.
Malik's latest album, Nobody is listening, due out in 2021. Since then, he's shared a few scattered singles, including “To Begin Again” with Ingrid Michaelson, a cover of Jimi Hendrix's “Angel,” and last year's “Love Like This.” In January, he collaborated with up-and-coming Pakistani band Aur on a remake of their hit single, “Tu Hai Kahan”.
