Well done Heldivers. PlayStation is now saying ok after players made it loud and clear that they didn't match the PSN login requirement to continue playing Helldivers 2 on a Windows PC via Steam.
After destroying all the goodwill Arrowhead Game Studios had built up with Helldivers 2 and its fantastic spin on a sort of live service, PlayStation finally admitted they screwed up by requiring PC gamers to get a free PSN account.
The decision came after two days Helldivers 2 Players taking to social media to vent their anger and flood the game's Steam page with negative reviews have hit other PlayStation titles after the popular shooter was removed from Steam in 177 countries.
Via the official PlayStation account on X, formerly Twitter, the company wrote:
Helldivers fans — we've heard your feedback about the Helldivers 2 account link update. The May 6 update, which would have required new players and current players to link their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts starting May 30, will not proceed.
We're still learning what's best for PC players, and your feedback has been invaluable. Thank you again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we will keep you posted on future plans.
What led to the overthrow of the PlayStation
The fallout from the stupid policy led Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt to express his frustration at X. “Waking up to yesterday's sunshine replaced by a dreary drizzle and howling winds makes me think about how I spent time those rare moments when everything was perfect,” Pilestedt said.
On Sunday, before PlayStation decided against the mandatory PSN login, he noted that his company was “talking solutions” with the company, which ultimately led to PlayStation's change of heart.
He too took some responsibilities on the matter as well, saying it wasn't entirely “flawless,” adding that they “didn't talk about it enough” about linking accounts.
The review bombardment and harassment of Arrowhead's community managers and developers likely helped reverse PlayStation's policy.
We are glad that people can spread democracy again and continue the fight to free Super Earth.
