Thalia and Maria Becerra sat down for a candid conversation about mental health and fame during Billboard Latin Music Week 2024.
During the 30-minute conversation, the Mexican pop diva and Argentinian artist—who took a break from social media over the summer to focus on her mental health—spoke intimately about accountability, haters and a positive mindset.
Below, check out some of the best quotes from their conversation:
Thalia on the term “Mental Health”: “Honestly, it's something new. I didn't have that in my teenage years when you need it most. That didn't exist, so you had to want to eat it and move on. You had no choice.”
Maria on social media exposure: “Social media is very important to the mental health of all of us. This exposure 24/7 and I feel the need or the pressure to have to show what you do, but beyond showing what I do, it has to look good, it has to look aesthetic. As you know everyone is going to be talking about it, it's such a big exposure.”
Thalia on being yourself: “You go viral when you're yourself. When you're honest, when you're in the moment, you're sharing, you're connecting with people. When you do it to try to reach a number because a person does good and you want that or better and you do it in a similar way, you lose your essence and you lose your way.”
Thalia for faith: “When it comes to the Bible, I am a Christian and I like the word. It is my strength and what keeps me going through all the craziness of this world we face everyday. That's it. Don't bring things from the past into the present. I already forgave you, I took it from you, don't keep punishing yourself. No one should point a finger at you. Live your life peacefully doing worthwhile things, doing things that make you grow spiritually, spreading good vibes to people you cross paths with, in your career giving positive things.”
Maria on discipline: “You can be talented and do many things, but discipline will get you there. It's the hard work. You get up after three days of work and do three shows in a row on five hours of sleep… and you miss your family and you feel bad and you eat bad, but you're there giving 100%. That extra you give, always giving an extra is what makes the difference. It's what creates excellence.”
Maria on Ignoring the Haters: “Try to put aside all that pressure that's so great and understand that maybe it's other people's objections projecting on me and trying not to take things personally. Realizing that this person doesn't know me, it's nothing and it will pass.”
Thalia on finding a support system: “You can work on your body. Exercise, which is great, getting oxygen, breathing, eating well, nutrition, water. Spiritually, keeping a line, having faith. You can work through all of that, but sometimes there's an imbalance in your brain or hormonal and you need someone to guide you and tell you it's going to be okay. You need a support system.”
