Everyone knows that life is full of lessons. However, not everyone knows how to channel those lessons and the emotions that accompany them into impactful music. That's what WHIPPED CREAM has done with their new EP, is this real?giving a new dimension to its sound.
The project, he says, was written during the “darkest moment” of his life.
“I think a lot of times people wonder, in both good and bad situations, 'Is this really happening? Is this really my life?'” WHIPPED CREAM said in a press release. “During that dark time, I had to find all the blessings in my life and hold on to them, knowing that God had the best intentions for me and that everything was happening for a reason.”
The EP begins with “real 4 me,” a collaboration with BKAYE that laments a past relationship. Asking the age-old question of what went wrong, the two create a joyful dreamscape wrapped in a four-on-the-floor groove. WHIPPED CREAM follows up with “about you,” exploring the wild speculation and painful nostalgia associated with the emotions of its predecessor. A hyperactive rhythm takes over the song, with Showjoe spitting lyrics that highlight the helplessness of wanting to recover a lost love.
“Promises” (featuring Trent Madison) sheds light on the post-breakup questioning of whether or not you really knew someone. WHIPPED CREAM, in its own ethereal tone, bluntly asks, “How long will it be until you tell me who you are?”
Perhaps the EP's most striking track is less of a dancefloor song and more of a lament from WHIPPED CREAM. “Is This Real? (Interlude)” hearkens back to his father's diagnosis of stage four prostate cancer, the vulnerable pathway of which serves as a vehicle for expressing his mental processes. After a sample of her father's voicemail, she repeatedly sings, “In a moment it could all disappear,” giving us a moment of introspection to contemplate the weight of the phrase. She later expresses, “I'd rather feel like this than nothing,” sending a powerful and emotionally validating message.
Next comes “Still,” which follows in the passionate footsteps of the previous tracks, but with a curiously hopeful tone. A euphoric melody and a hopeful message are hidden in the voice of WHIPPED CREAM, marking an emotional turning point in the process of overcoming unfortunate situations.
At the end of the EP, the song “life is not a crime” sees Sjayy spitting a bold and lustful message that is juxtaposed with WHIPPED CREAM's melancholic vocals, which repeatedly plead “Let me love you.” Lastly, “love is not enough” begins with a slow beat before taking the project to its highest level with an intense drum & bass sequence.
