Crate Digging is a series of articles by Consequence which dives deep into music history to uncover several albums that every music fan should know. In this edition, rock icons Heart select 10 (errrr… let's say 9.5) essential rock albums from the 70s that everyone should listen to.
You simply can't tell the story of rock music without mentioning a small, humble band from British Columbia fronted by two talented sisters: Heart. (Just listen to their Story behind the song (Episode as proof.) Their mix of folk, hard rock and pop couldn't have been more emblematic of '70s popular guitar music, and it turned out they could play the axe, too.
Of course, their style was influenced by the incredible art that surrounded them. Nancy and Ann Wilson may have been extremely talented musicians and songwriters, but they were also devoted fans. They spent their time in the midst of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young songs, trying to learn Led Zeppelin songs or praising Rod Stewart's stage presence.
“It’s the reason Heart is on the planet, you know? Albums like this,” Nancy explains. “All of our DNA comes from all these types of records.”
So, we reached out to Nancy and Ann to compile Heart's list of 10 essential '70s rock albums that they say should be in everyone's collection. The sisters take turns gushing about albums by some of the decade's most pivotal artists, and even find common ground on one record in particular (no spoilers!).
Read on to see which 1970s rock albums Nancy and Ann Wilson think everyone should own.
Editor's note: These interviews were conducted before Heart postponed their tour due to Ann Wilson's cancer treatment.
