Digging boxes is our recurring series that delves into music history to uncover several albums that every music fan should know. In this edition, The Jesus Lizard’s David Yow looks at 10 great albums by artists with names that start with “L.”
For the first time in over a quarter of a century, a new album from The Jesus Lizard is on the horizon, primed like a dirty bomb that's ready to cause mayhem and tear shit up via their reptilian style of noise rock. Shelf (available Friday, September 13th on Ipecac Recordings; pre-order now) here) coming 26 years after the band's last release, does The Jesus Lizard still have the secret, furious sauce that made records like Goat either Liar So blunt?

Damn, they do.
As heard on singles like “Hide & Seek” and “Alexis Feels Sick,” the passage of time seems to have had little impact on The Jesus Lizard's sonic and thematic interests. In some ways, Shelf It's as energetic, aggressive and loud as any of the band's '90s material.
“The thing is, I rarely listen to music these days. Maybe once in a while when I’m driving, but at home, never,” says frontman David Yow. ConsequenceInstead, what reaches his ears are the sounds of “the cat screaming and the wife asking when dinner is, things like that.”
As a result, Shelf It feels more like a lost session from ’97 than a comeback record looking to bring The Jesus Lizard into the 2020s, and thank goodness for that. Never change, Jesus Lizard, never change.
To celebrate the launch of ShelfWe reached out to Yow to talk music via our Crate Digging series. In typical Yow fashion, he poked fun at the concept of the column, opting not to feature albums from a particular genre or scene, but instead a collection of records by artists whose name starts with “L.” You gotta love it.
“The reason I made this list is because over the last three or four years, I got interested in Lhasa De Sela… I just wanted to include her somehow,” Yow explains. “And her name starts with ‘L,’ and Led Zeppelin was my first concert, so I decided I was going to include names that started with ‘L.’ I went through my iTunes music and sorted it by ‘L,’ and some of the options were pretty slim. Like Lotte Lenya… eh, I don’t care. And Love Kit, that was a band my wife was in years ago, so it doesn’t matter.”
