Freaknik took Atlanta HBCU spring break during the 80's and 90's by storm. The cultural street party has been turned into a documentary as of Hulu Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Said is scheduled to hit the streamer on March 21st.
Ahead of the P. Frank Williams-directed documentary debuting at SXSW next month, Hulu released a trailer detailing Black excellence to give attendees a nostalgic blast from the past and inform those who haven't chance to learn about history they missed.
21 Savage, Jermaine Dupri and Uncle Luke are on board as producers for the film, which also boasts appearances from Lil Jon, Killer Mike, Too Short and more.
“In his heart, Freaknik is a music documentary. Luke is his soundtrack Freaknik, [Dupri’s] So the So Def label is directly related to Freaknik and 21 Savage is the new school. They're fascinated with the wild things we did, the clothes and the music of that era,” Williams said. Variety. “The Freaknik legacy really started in '83, I don't know if people realized that. It was for kids trying to find a place for black joy. Freaknik wasn't just about the party. Our goal was to show how it affected politics, culture, race, there was a lot to do with sexuality, gender.”
Freaknik provided a place for youth to indulge in debauchery but also to celebrate themselves and their sexual expression. Lil Jon called the block party the “biggest gathering of black people in America.” Killer Mike joked to close the teaser: “Trust me, your mom and dad are down.”
However, within all the partying, there was a dark side to Freaknik that the documentary made sure not to shy away from with scenes of violence erupting between the overwhelming party crowd and police brutality.
“The twist, the cars, the sexiness, the joy, the dukes margaritas – that's the candy. But there's some vegetables in it as well — which is Black empowerment, police brutality was a part of it, Black cultural awareness, young women becoming aware of their sexuality, young men as well.” Williams continued.
“Freaknik it's really a coming-of-age story about a generation trying to find a voice in a world that didn't accept them — but that's a place they made for themselves. Freaknik is the ultimate personification of that.”
