Charli XCX and Troye Sivan played the first of two sold-out shows at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Tuesday night (October 15), practically turning the 17,500-capacity venue into a revamped, sex-positive dance. party that lived up to the tour's Sweat moniker.
Given Charli's influence on culture this summer, there was no shortage Brat public representation, formal and informal — Brat green hats, Brat green t-shirts, Brat green accessories — not to mention an abundance of black knee-high boots and Troye-esque audience members in white tank tops and baggy pants. Onstage, the two stars traded sets and occasionally came together (no pun intended) to perform, including duets like “1999” and the show-closing “Talk Talk.”
Thanks to the cultural juggernaut that was Crazy Summer — an out-of-nowhere phenomenon that earned Charli nearly $10 million, according to Bulletin board ratings — it would be easy to overemphasize the “Von Dutch” singer's portion of the show. But in truth, the tour is a well-balanced affair held together by the easy camaraderie of the two stars. Even when one of them ceded the stage to the other, the absentee's presence was always felt (and often seen, thanks to a clever, layered set-up).
The show's stars hit Los Angeles as the tour draws to a close. After playing the Forum again on Wednesday, the duo are set to play just four more dates, wrapping up the tour at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena on October 23.
Here are the six best moments from Tuesday night.
-
THE Brat The curtain falls
Like the first hit of a beer at 9 p.m., Troye hooked fans into the concert with a smooth, energetic trio of songs that opened the show that included “Got Me Started,” “What's the Time Where You Are?” and “My My My!” But the moment Charli arrived on the scene could be compared to shooting your first take. Indeed, her entrance was a real show: Implementing from behind a huge Brat-with a signature curtain, the star really got the party started with a rousing, incredible performance of her remix of “365” alongside tour opener Shygirl. From that point on, we were all drunk.
-
Kesha Joins The Party
Given the unusual party-girl vibe she employed early in her career, Kesha feels like Charli's progenitor in some ways, making their duet on the latter's recently released remix of “Spring Breakers” seem like a foregone conclusion. Entering the stage dressed in a pink (fake?) fur coat, Kesha joined Charli for a rocking rendition of “Spring Breakers” before launching into a rendition of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 of 2009's “TiK ToK”, with Charli and Troye providing support for what amounted to a dirty pop dream team.
-
'Guess'
The Forum crowd was no doubt hoping for a Billie Eilish cameo at Tuesday night's show, but the star (who will play Madison Square Garden on Oct. 16 and Saturday Night Live this weekend) didn't materialize for “Guess,” her duet with Charlie that reached No. 12 on the Hot 100 in August. Don't worry: Charli is a magnetic performer who can hold a crowd with Madonna-level composure, and she turned the song into a riveting one-woman performance, booty and tumbling, and at one point even running her tongue along of the scene. And by design, we didn't have to guess the color of her underwear (it was red).
-
A Tate & Troye Reunion
After Kesha, the second special guest of the night was rising star Tate McRae, who appeared alongside Sivan to perform the pair's 2021 duet “You.” Although her time on the scene was brief, McRae's cameo underscored how far she's come since the song's release more than three years ago: Last year, “Greedy” marked her highest entry on the Hot 100 chart to date, reaching No. 3.
-
The Rush of 'Rush'
“I can smell the poppers from here,” Sivan croons at the top of “Rush,” 2023's summer anthem about the joys of casual sex. Fittingly, the show opened with the singer performing a theatrical barrel roll with the help of two of his dancers, a visual reference to the song's deliriously horny (and unapologetically gay) music video. The single, which has arguably become Sivan's signature song, served as the highlight (or pinnacle, if you will) of his solo on-stage outings, featuring deftly gay choreography and Sivan's brief but passionate on-stage lip lock with one of his male backup dancers. in the carnal promise of the song.
-
Charli's 'Track 10' Freakout
Although Charlie's night was for sure Brat-heavily, one of Tuesday's most memorable moments came during her encore performance Pop 2of “Track 10.” While performing to the camera, her dancing reached an almost primal level as she struggled, thrashed and twirled in a kind of performance art release that perhaps best encapsulated the Sweat tour's ecstatic message: Leave your inhibitions at the door.
