Getting a makeup look that makes your eyes really pop usually consists of a bold eye shadow with your trusty mascara. Without a set of false lashes, mascara must rely on your natural lashes to provide length and curl. For the most natural look, however, eyelash groups are starting to emerge as a tool for creating fuller lashes — and they don't require an appointment like eyelash extensions.
What exactly are cluster lashes? They are described by editorial makeup artist Gabriel Barse Bulletin board as “little bundles of magic for your eyes”, but more simply, the makeup tool is a small bundle of false eyelashes that you can place anywhere along your lash line for extra volume and length. Once they open, you can just put on some liquid eyeliner and you're good to go.
“They are extremely flexible,” adds Barse. “So whether it's a subtle enhancement or a full glam look, lashes have got you covered.

“Plus, they're lightweight so you can wear them all day without any discomfort,” Barse says of the brand. “They are my guests for every occasion!”
Are eyelashes better than false eyelashes and extensions?
Choosing between the three styles depends on what kind of look you want and how much work you want to do. Eyelash groups, in Barse's opinion, are the “perfect middle ground between strip lashes and eyelash extensions.” Unlike a full strip of false lashes, groups can give you control over how full or natural you want your lashes to look.
“Plus, it's less of a commitment than extensions, which is a bonus if you like to change up your look,” she adds. “So if you like to have options and flexibility, lashes might just be your new best friend.”
If you have smaller eyes, Rae recommends incorporating full lash groups to help shape and add length to your eyes.
For a more permanent look, you can have eyelash extensions professionally applied at a salon, which may cost more money but have longer-lasting results.
How many sets of lashes per eye should a beginner try?
Before you dive into your new box of eyelash groups, you'll want to get a feel for how to use the little bundles before haphazardly slathering them on your eyes. Once you've determined the look you want, Moreau suggests trying at least four on each eye, as “you don't want to overwhelm your eyes.”
And as for where to put them, Rae and Barse's strategy involves starting at the outer corner of the eye and working your way to the inner corner. Just make sure you place them symmetrically and as you get more comfortable you can start incorporating more lashes into your eyes.
What is the best way to apply eyelashes?
To get the most natural finish, you'll need to have a few tools handy: an eyelash applicator (or Moreau says you can use tweezers if you're in a pinch) as well as a good lash curler and sealer. Both makeup artists favor Lashify's eyelash glue. Be sure to start with clean, makeup-free lashes, and then there are a few techniques you can use.
Rae and Moreau like to run an applicator over your natural lashes “like you're putting on mascara,” Rae describes, then use your applicator to lift a clump of lashes, pull up your lash line, and hook it down from your natural eyelashes.
“Just above the water line,” Ray instructs.
Barse uses a similar method, but instead of applying the glue and bond formula to all of your natural lashes, he likes to dab a small amount onto the base of the lash mesh.
“Let it stick for a few seconds (this helps them stick better),” says Barse. “Then, using tweezers, place the cluster as close to your natural lash line as possible. I like to start on the outside corner and work my way in.”
How can you make eyelashes last longer?
Lashes aren't meant to last forever, but you can extend their life by doing a few things. When you apply the groups to your eyes, Moreau says you can double bond the false lashes to your natural lashes.
To do this, you'll run the eyelash tie-in onto your natural lashes and then apply a small amount to the set as well before attaching them to your lashes.
If the lashes have already been applied, the first 24 hours are the most important, as this is when the glue needs to set properly. Barse explains that you'll want to avoid rubbing or touching your eyes, other than keeping them dry.
“When you need to remove make-up, use an oil-free make-up remover and be gentle around your lashes – this will help them stay put for as long as possible,” she adds.
