A recent study has revealed an increase in planned drug use at music festivals. According to this year's results Study on medication safety at music festivalsConducted by research firm Innerbody, 84% of festival-goers in 2024 plan to use drugs on the festival grounds, a 10% increase from last year's survey.
Marijuana takes the crown for the third year in a row as the most consumed drug at festivals: this year, according to the data, 65% of festival-goers plan to enjoy their time with some form of cannabis. Cocaine, psychedelics, MDMA and ketamine follow.
The survey also took into consideration specific festivals and gatherings: Wisconsin's Rock Fest ranks as the top festival for drug use. While not a music festival, Burning Man, a gathering in the desert, took second place, with Coachella, Rolling Loud, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza proving to be popular destinations for consumption. The survey was conducted on a sample of 900 respondents.
The report goes on to reveal that 3 in 5 people plan to buy drugs at a festival site, a demographic that leans heavily toward millennials. Of those who purchase the product in advance, 80% of those surveyed intend to try their medications beforehand.
Ultimately, the report notes, alcohol is always the most consumed substance at festivals, and heat stroke is the leading cause of health crises among drug users and non-users at festivals. As such, it is highly recommended that anyone planning to participate stay hydrated, stay close to their friends, and familiarize themselves with the locations of the medical tents.
In other less stressful drug-related news, Willie Nelson plans to launch his own Cannabis Cookbook (just in time for Thanksgiving).
