Kali Uchis' genre-hopping career has so far been split evenly between Spanish- and English-language albums, which is fitting for an artist born in Virginia but who spent chunks of her childhood in her father's native Colombia. “When you're not just one thing and you're as multi-dimensional an artist as I am,” he says, “I think it's a lot harder for people to understand how to sell me as a product. But I think they don't realize that being multidimensional is a lot of different people's experiences… I'm not going to compromise who I am or what I do or show just this little part of me.”
In an interview with Julia Lopez for his new episode Rolling Stone Music Now, Uchis breaks down her new album, Orchids, including her collaborations with Peso Pluma and Karol G. “I feel like every song is really its own era and its own aesthetic,” she says of the album, which manages to be both sonically diverse and relentlessly uptempo.
