Four years later the death of Neil Peart, the Rush drummer's final book is about to be published.
Silver Surfers, subtitled Sports Cars of the Sixties, documents Peart's automania. “For Neil Peart, cars were a lifelong passion and in his latest literary creation, he writes about his beloved Silver Surfers collection. the joy of collecting these exquisite, rare and important sports cars and the myriad ways in which they brought him great joy,” the book's synopsis reads. “Silver Surfers it's a tribute to those cars that meant so much to him and the passion for the road that fueled his life.”
Silver Surfers, due for release on May 7 via Insight Editions, is available for pre-order now via the Rush website. The 96-page coffee table book also contains a foreword written by his widow Carrie Nuttall-Peart.
In a statement before his death, Peart said of what would eventually be his final book, “The title Silver Surfers because my car collection came to mind while driving my DB5 up and down Pacific Coast Highway. Because it felt right, I guess – the idea that I was just one of the wave riders…”
He continued, “Seeking natural peace, I often drove up and down the Santa Monica Mountains. Beyond Malibu and into Ventura County, I would weave along barren ridges of rock and vegetation, the ocean always on one long side… The waves were slow and gentle or made a loud, rolling beat…”
In addition to being a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the fourth greatest drummer of all time, Peart also amassed an extensive bibliography of fiction and non-fiction books as an author. Peart wrote a handful of travel memoirs detailing a bicycle trip to West Africa and a trip to Big Bend National Park, and also collaborated with science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson. their last book together, twisted destinyreleased in 2022.
Part of the proceeds from its sale Silver Surfers will go to the Neil Peart Memorial at Lakeside Park and the American Brain Tumor Association from The Estate of Neil Peart.
