Later this month, Massachusetts indie folk Cloudbelly are set to release their upcoming sophomore album. i know i know i know, arrival February 23. The band returned last year after debuting a pair of new singles, “November” and “If You Want,” and today they're back with another new track, “Handfuls,” premiering on Under the Radar.
As the band describes, “[frontperson Corey Laitman] he wrote most of these songs in the wake of the back-to-back, closely timed collapses of two formative relationships. The album is – among other things – a document of their sincere attempt to grieve. To remember; to take stock? get angry; forgive? and come to terms with the painful necessity of these ending relationships.
The title of the album alludes to this gap, between understanding the way things are, and the seeming inability to embrace it. i know i know i know––acceptance and hesitation packed into a single turn of phrase. It's about facing the fact that when it comes to healing and recovery, we are both the poison and the medicine. It's about being present with the parts of ourselves that hurt.”
Embracing the emotional side of the record, the album also sees Laitman, guitarist Sam Perry and drummer Nate Mondschein complement their sound with sweeping strings and arrangements, incorporating a cinematic scale to the tracks. This element comes into full play with “Handfuls”, which adopts richer and more organic instrumentation than last year's singles. It opens amid atmospheric production, simmering acoustic tones and string notes that tug at the edges of the song, all swirling around Laitman's vocals. The song starts off shadowy, but steadily unfolds to dramatic heights, rising amid impressive drums and soaring backing vocals.
Meanwhile, the band says of the track, “'Handfuls' is one of Cloudbelly's darkest outings, looping and meditative as it mourns a recently broken connection. The song builds from a sparse opening to a rich, percussive climax with strings by Cynthia Tolson (MUNA).
