For her next album, Dua Lipa pursued perfection. And, as history tells us, perfection takes time and hard graft.
The British-Albanian star opened the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles with a performance of “Training Season” and “Houdini,” the first singles from her upcoming third album.
Lipa stayed in Los Angeles and stopped Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night (Feb. 8) for a chat about her writing process.
“Training Season” and “Houdini,” we've learned, made the cut from nearly 100 songs written for the project, each of which lives in a treasured book that Lipa showed Kimmel.
“It has every song I wrote for that album,” he says of the book. “I wrote 97 songs.” Are any of them terrible? “A lot,” he admits. “About 80 of them.”
“Training Season” and “Houdini” are not among them.
Since the release of her successful second album in 2020, Future Nostalgiawhich reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, Lipa has grown in confidence.
“The second I write a song, I know if it's good or not or if it's close,” he tells Kimmel. “Every song on this album unlike any of the other records I've done, I've re-written it over and over until I felt it was perfect, which I really wasn't. the confidence to do in my previous records”.
Earlier in her career, she continues, whatever was written that day “was pretty much what everybody heard.”
This time, “I'm a lot more sure of myself as a songwriter and a performer and how I want things to be and sound and look.” On the new collection, he “went in, dug a little deeper and changed things to where it felt perfect. And I'm proud of that.”
During her guest appearance on Kimmel, Lipa chatted with Katy Perry, tried out some Albanian expressions with the host and explained how she's been meticulously taking notes since she was “tiny,” collecting her “ideas, plans and dreams” on paper. her”.
What he didn't discuss was the album's title, tracklist or release date. “Because I want to keep it a secret for a little while longer,” he says. “I can't reveal my secrets.”
The upcoming LP is its follow-up Future Nostalgiawhich spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Official UK Albums Chart, won Best Pop Vocal album at the 2021 Grammy Awards and featured “Levitating,” the No. 1 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 Songs chart for the end of 2021.
