Amy Schumer has been diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome. The comedian revealed his health condition during an appearance on Jessica Yellin's News Not Noise newslettersaying the diagnosis has made her feel “reborn” after the recent debate surrounding her more swollen face.
Cushing's syndrome occurs when someone has elevated levels of cortisol (the main stress hormone) in the body for a long time, according to Mayo Clinic. Possible symptoms include weight gain, high blood pressure and bone loss. Treatment may include medication, radiation therapy, or surgery.
The actress said she found out about her condition while promoting Season 2 of her show Zoe & Beth. During her various press appearances, fans began to wonder why she had a more “bloated face,” often taking to her social media comments section to ask about her health status.
“While I was doing press on camera for my Hulu show, I was also in MRI machines for four hours at a time, my veins closing from the amount of blood that was coming out and thinking that I might not be around to see my son to grow. ” she said. “So finding out that I have the kind of Cushing's that will work itself out and that I'm healthy was the greatest news imaginable.”
And while normally her appearance is anything but helpful, Schrumer said the increase in concern (and criticism) prompted her to take a deeper look at her health.
“They were a crazy couple [of] weeks for me and my family,” he said. “Besides my health scares, I also had to be on camera with the internet. But thank God for that. Because that's how I understood that something was wrong.”
Schumer said she decided to go public with her condition because she wants to “stand up for women's health.”
“The shaming and criticism of our ever-changing bodies is something I've dealt with and seen for a long time,” Schumer said. “I so want women to love themselves and be relentless in fighting for their own health in a system that usually doesn't believe them.”
Schumer initially responded to comments that her face was swollen after her appearances The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The view earlier this month. “Thank you so much for all your input on my face!” Schumer wrote on Instagram. “I enjoyed feedback and thought about my appearance like all women for almost 20 years. And you're right it's more swollen than normal right now.”
In her initial statement, she added that she has endometriosis and that “there are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now, but I'm fine.”
